The North Face's original very specific, technical advertising for the Serow says that the brand tested this item "in conditions with chill factors up to -50 F with excellent results." Another catalog gem: "The smooth outer spills wind better than is possible with any sewn through design, and it increases the amount of dead air space around you to a constant 3.8 cm + (1.5") of loft."

It's hard to imagine the present-day North Face brand marketing of an item with so much sincerity and genuine interest in conveying every single little last detail. But that's the really interesting thing about the North Face. It's such a huge and historically eclectic brand. It has gone through so many different phases and has stood for so many different things over the years. Indeed, the sheer breadth of types of stores that carry North Face products is staggering in its own right.
