So, let's say you were a teenager in the 1930s, and you moved to California bringing along your father's Kodak camera, and you were like, I'm just going to surf and take pictures of surfers for a while, and then World War II started and you were like, I'm going to document the hell out of this tumultuous time in my community. There's a simplicity in the images, a towel tousled, sun kissed, naive quality. But there's also a rich depth to the images that only times of turmoil can bring.
