Time RiftIs this a memory or a dream? He watches a California navel orange roll down the sand dune behind him. As it comes to a stop near his surfboard, the fruit looks so ripe that its color might slip off and soak into the sand. Dusk turns the sky purple, and everything smells pure, like salt and driftwood. Down the beach, a bonfire throws sparks toward the stars. His friends are still coming in from the waves with their boards, joking and yelling.A girl in a bikini jogs up to him. She bends down, laughing, and reclaims her runaway orange. She is all long, bare limbs. The downy hairs on her arms are stiff with sea salt. Her smile is as distracting as the setting sun. She holds out a hand to pull him up and take him to the bonfire. Wherever, whenever he is, he’s decided this sun-bleached world is made for staying a while. But in a blink, the girl and her orange are gone. It’s mid-day now and the sun scorches his back. He half-knows, in the way of dreams, that he has fallen forward through a rift in time, to a different seaside, under another sky, on a different coast. Behind him now, there is a boardwalk instead of a dune, and skateboards rattle along it, making the sand tracked there by flip flops jump like popped corn in a frying pan. He stands at the water’s edge with the other surfers, watching the sets come in. Their surfboards, propped upright in the sand, look like slats in a fence, like a border between worlds. These surfers, he knows, are different from those in the other world, but still the same somehow, his brothers. With the next blink, the world tilts again and the sand slides out from under him. The orange is back, now cradled in his hand. The bikini girl, just a little bit older, wearing a wedding ring, sits in the rattling seat next to his. A voice announces the next subway stop back to the city from Rockaway Beach. He looks at their feet in flip flops crusted with sand, resting side by side on the chewing gum dotted subway floor. He begins to peel the orange, breathing the smell of the rind. He offers the bikini girl a segment of the flesh and when she takes it, he can see that she too is caught by a memory, or is it a dream, of another coast and another time. And in another blink, the rift opens back up wide enough to allow them both to slip eagerly through. |

T.S.P.2A perfectly pared-down and urbanized version of the Batten Travel Shell Parka, the T.S.P. 2 is more aimed toward town wear than mountain wear. With a cotton half-lining inside and super soft cotton on the exterior, it looks great and is comfortable for all-day wear. Unlike its more technical older brother, T.S.P. 2 skips the zip front pocket in favor of four buttoned front pockets.

CUTTER JACThe sun is barely rising, and you’re already on your way to the beach. A jacket would be too heavy; a shirt would be too light. What could be more convenient than a garment that falls exactly in-between? The laid-back style of 1970’s California influenced the design and fabric choice, and then we updated it for a contemporary fit. The front pockets easily store keys and wax. Wearing the Batten Cutter Jac, you’ll feel like a modern-day Jerry Lopez.
