Perfect Summer DayTom waits for the train on the platform in Rockaway. It's a midsummer Sunday morning, 9AM. His hair is wet from the beach showers, and his surfboard is tucked under his arm. His empty stomach rumbles ahead of him down the tracks toward breakfast in the city. The breeze off the horizon smells good and hot, like liquid sun. Soon, he knows, this heat will sweep into the city, blowing legs bare and shortening sleeves, making the buildings sweat with fever, trickling down the vents and stairways into the deep, jangling pockets of the subway. A day like today, it makes a man forget even the possibility of fall or winter. A day like today makes Tom dream anew of the vacations he's always meant to take—to Hawaii where the surfers really know what's what, to Yosemite where the trails wait for him to hike them, to Baja where, in his mind, his tent is set up just off the shore, and his campfire sprays sparks against the night. JFK airport is on the train line between Tom and the city, just a couple of stops away. Tom peeks into his bag . . . he could travel today. He's got a change of clothes, an anorak, a credit card. No passport, though, and of course there's work tomorrow. The promise of adventure tugs at Tom's stomach, joining his hunger, gearing up for mutiny. His phone rings. Where are you? asks his friend. Still at the beach? How about brunch in Brooklyn? Soccer in Prospect Park. Backyard barbeque with friends and family. Camping later, back out at the beach. Are you up for it? Tom listens and as he does, his stomach settles, quitting its complaint. Yeah, he says. I'm ready. I'm game. The train pulls to a stop and grabs him up and rushes him block by block into town. Hawaii, Yosemite, Baja—they can wait. Tom loves summer in New York City. |

PACKABLE ANORAKOpen the center zip pocket and flip the anorak into itself—you're left with a compact package, ready to whip out of your bag should the wind lift. The seams on each side have pockets. The zip on the right side makes the anorak easy to slip on and off.

OVERHANG SHORTSToday at 5AM, you drove to the beach, searching for overhead waves. After lunch, you went indoor climbing. At night, you went to a friend's house for a barbeque. These shorts are so comfortable, so stylish and versatile, that you never had to change your clothes. The front zipper pocket is designed so that you won't lose your wallet or keys. The inseam has an extra panel for greater leg flexibility, up to a 180 degree spread. The curve of the back pocket fits the line of your bum, for walking, sitting, or even dancing.

BOARD SHORTSWith a double needle stitch seam, even if you wipe out and get rolled into the sand by a wave, you can count on these shorts holding up. The four-ply taslan nylon wicks fast so that when you relax on the beach between sessions, you'll be comfortable and dry. Keep your keys close with the elastic cord in the back pocket. The one line on the left leg? It marks the first year of Batten Sportswear. Celebrate with us!

BEACH BUCKETThis bag was inspired by the rope bucket used in rock climbing but found its real purpose at the beach. Fold in your board shorts and towel and slide the handles down to use it as a backpack. Later, pull the handles up and use it as a tote when you shop for post-surf lunch supplies.

CUTTER JACThe sun is barely rising, and you're already on your way to the beach. A jacket would be too heavy; a shirt would be too light. What could be more convenient than a garment that falls exactly in-between? The laid-back style of the 1970s influenced the design, and then we updated it for a contemporary fit. The front pockets easily store keys and wax. Wearing the Batten Cutter Jac, you'll feel like a modern-day Jerry Lopez.

EASTERN SHIRTThe Eastern Shirt is an update on the classic cut and fit of the western style cowboy shirt. We've revised the collar for a pointy 1970s style. The snap buttons make it easy to take off when you're ready to change before getting into the water at the beach.

TREK SHORTSEvery closet needs to have a pair of shorts like these. We've taken the classic design of hiking shorts—complete with thick, durable fabric and a boxy cut—and updated it. The flap on the back right pocket has been removed so that you can have better access to your wallet. The front pockets have been streamlined for a more urban fit.
